Greenway Hike in Belfast Area
Belfast
NY
This week’s hike in the southern tier is tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 14th, at 9 am. Meet at GLF Road north of Belfast (from Rt.19 turn onto GLF Rd, just north of Dollar General, and park at the left curve without blocking the Greenway). We hike south to Hughes Street and beyond to Gleason Hill Road about 2.25 miles round trip. A historic landmark at Hughes Street is the Rail and Titsworth Canal Warehouse. Built about 1853 in the Greek Revival style, it is the oldest surviving Genesee Valley Canal warehouse and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The warehouse has a most interesting and colorful history, having served as a hotel, brothel, barn, and storehouse and as the scene of several murders. Along the route, is also an extensive wetland marsh and the contraption that thwarts the Beavers who are busy as beavers building their dam. Plan to join us, the weather forecast is good.
