Start the New Year right by getting outdoors on January 1st. Join one of four 1st Day Events on the Greenway offered by the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park (GVGSP).
These FREE EVENTS, scheduled for Avon, Scottsville, Cuba and Hinsdale, will be great activities for the entire family, and leashed pets are allowed to join the fun. Dress weather appropriate and please follow all current Covid-19 guidelines appropriate for indoor and outdoor activity. If there is snow, feel free to bring snowshoes and/or skis. In case of severe weather, a posting will be made on the “Genesee Valley Greenway State Park” Facebook page advising the cancellation of any of these events.

Avon Walk/Ride – Between 9 am – 3 pm Join us for a self-guided walk/ride any time between 9 and 3, or bring your snowmobile if there is enough snow. Park at the Erie-Attica Trail Parking Lot – State Route 5 to Farmers Rd. at the west edge of Avon (42.922842, -77.756422). Walk approximately a mile west on the Erie-Attica Trail, then turn north onto the newly resurfaced Genesee Valley Greenway for more if you’d like. The trail is open all day, but from 9:00 – 3:00 snack bags and beverages will be available to patrons, compliments of the Henrietta Hill & Gully Riders and the Caledonia Trailblazers snowmobile clubs.
Scottsville 1st Day Walk/Hike/Ride – Fire Pit 11am-2 pm Try out the recently reopened section of the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park in Scottsville, just 10 miles south of downtown Rochester! Ride your bike from Genesee Valley Park or drive to Scottsville and utilize the Canawaugus Park lot or nearby municipal parking on Main Street. This self-guided walk/ hike/ride starts out at the Oatka Creek “George” Bridge and heads south along the newly resurfaced Greenway to the Lehigh Valley Trail and Genesee River bridge overlook, approximately a 5-mi round trip. From 8:00-3:00, the Artisan Coffeehouse of Scottsville will be open for cocoa, breakfast sandwiches, hot soup, subs and drinks (2 Main St, just 700ft from the Canawaugus Park Trailhead). Stop by the coffeehouse between 11-2 pm for free s’mores, a quick warm-up around the fire pit, and restrooms.
Cuba 1st Day Hike – Between 12 – 3 pm Ring in the New Year with a delightful walk along Genesee Valley Greenway State Park in Cuba! Enjoy a relaxing, easy trail and spectacular views along Griffin and Oil Creeks. 2.5 miles round trip. Meet at the trail head on Bull St (42.216592, -78.283329) for a self-guided hike. Between the hours of 12:00-3:00, interpreter extraordinaire Michael Landowski will be on site for Q&A. Also, during that time frame, the Palmer Opera House will hand out snack bags both at the trail head and for those visiting the Palmer (12 Main St, 1/2 mile from the trail head) for warmth and restrooms.
Hinsdale 1st Day Walk/Hike – 9 am Ring in the New Year with an outdoor show & tell presentation by the Hinsdale Historical Society followed by an easy, yet invigorating 2-mile walk, along a very secluded section of the Greenway heading east along Oil Creek. Meet at Hinsdale United Methodist Church, Main St. (42.167278, -78.387766) at 9 am. Parking is available. A prepackaged beverage and snack will be on hand, while restrooms are available inside the church.
