Historic Oakland & Nunda Genesee Valley Canal LocksĀ and More

On Saturday, October 28, from 10 to 11 am, OPRHP Environmental Educator Conrad Baker is leading a guided hike at the Genesee Valley Canal Locks at Oakland.
Participants should bring a lunch since, after the Oakland locks walk, they are invited to travel about 1.5 mi. east on Rt. 436 to the Nunda Historical Society (NHS) at 24 Portage Street where a restroom, water, coffee, and dessert will be available. At about 11:30 am, NHS members Tom Cook and Joan Schumaker will present a 30 to 40 minute program using maps and original canal drawings to introduce the route of the canal through the village of Nunda. At about 1:15 pm, after a picnic lunch in the pavilion, we will walk the canal route to view locations of 3 locks, a pedestrian footbridge, and an existing 1870 canal warehouse. Nunda’s GVG State Park Branch Trailhead and 12 marvelous murals are at the end of the route. A guided return trip through Nunda’s 1830s village square will take you back to the NHS. Everyone welcome! Please plan to join us.

Note: There is plenty of parking at the NHS so people may park there and carpool to the 10 am Oakland Lock walk.
