Anyone wishing to place a cache on the Genesee Valley Greenway should first refer to the NYS Office of Parks website to obtain a copy of Guidance Document: Geocaching in State Parks and Historic Sites (pdf). A special permit is required for placing a cache on the GVG. The application form is available from the GVG Park Manager, 1 Letchworth State Park, Castile, NY 14427. The completed application for a permit must be submitted to the GVG Park Manager, along with the coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the GVG locations for your proposed caches.
If you are new to geocaching, go to www.geocaching.com to learn how to get started and to find coordinates for caches that have been placed on the GVG. When arriving at the area the GPS indicates as the right spot, look for hidden containers or more coordinates, which will take you to another area. When (if) you find the container, it will contain a log book for signing your name. Then go back to www.geocaching.com and write about your experiences in finding the cache.
Many cachers practice C.I.T.O. (Cache In Trash Out). Consider taking a trash bag with you to help clean up the GVG trail while geocaching.
