Volunteers have been the foundation of the Greenway’s development since its creation in 1991. Opportunities abound to help with tree planting, brush removal, clean ups, and building and installing enhancements such as kiosks, benches, and mile markers. Volunteers also contribute their talent to leading trail outings, grant applications, promotional activities, writing newsletter stories, photography, and staffing information tables at events. When working on the Greenway, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation provides Worker's Compensation Insurance protection to the extent provided by law for all persons completing a NYS Volunteer Service Agreement.

Regular maintenance ensures the trail is an enjoyable experience for everyone. Trail adopters assist NY State Parks by committing to a minimum of four work sessions to help with routine maintenance such as mowing, pruning, brushing, litter removal, gate painting, and trail surface patching. NY State Parks erects Adopt-a-Trail signs recognizing the group or individuals at each end of their adopted trail segment.
